Hotels in Menaggio Lake Como: Why It’s a Better Base Than You Think

If you’re looking at hotels in Menaggio Lake Como, you’re probably trying to figure out if this is actually the right place to stay—or if you’d be better off in towns like Bellagio or Varenna.

I’ve had that same decision to make—and after multiple trips to Lake Como, Menaggio is a town I keep coming back to.

A Base That Actually Works

Menaggio sits right in the middle of the lake, which makes getting around easy, but what really stands out is how it feels once you’re there. It has this balance that’s a little harder to find in other towns—it’s still very much a classic Lake Como setting, but it also functions more like a small, livable town rather than just a place people pass through.

Yes, Lake Como is busy in peak season, and ferries can absolutely fill up—but Menaggio doesn’t get hit in quite the same way as the train-access towns. When trains arrive in places like Varenna, you’ll often see large groups moving through all at once. In Menaggio, the flow feels more spread out, which makes a noticeable difference when you’re actually staying there.

Easy to Get Around (Without the Stress)

What I love most about staying in hotels in Menaggio Lake Como is how practical it is for transit. Menaggio sits on two key ferry routes, and once you understand that, the whole lake becomes much easier to navigate. If you’re interested in learning more about the towns on the different sections of the lake I cover my favorites in my Lake Como travel guide.

The first is what I think of as the middle lake triangle, with frequent ferries running between Menaggio, Bellagio, and Varenna. This is one of the most popular areas of the lake, and having regular connections between all three towns makes it incredibly easy to move around without overplanning your day.

The second route runs north to south along the western side of the lake—and this is the one I use the most. It gives you easy access to places like Tremezzo and Lenno for villa visits, and even further down to Argegno, for its variety of restaurants and cafes.

You’ve also got the car ferry to Bellagio, which adds another layer of flexibility—even if you’re traveling on foot.

And it’s not just ferries. Menaggio is also well connected by bus, which opens up even more options—especially if you want to reach smaller towns, trailheads, or places that aren’t directly on the main ferry routes. You can also charter classic wooden boats.

There’s also a full grocery store—Conad—where you can pick up snacks, extra water, and a bottle of wine. I love having that option, especially when I’ve booked a room with a lake view balcony. I like to put together my own aperitivo and enjoy it privately overlooking the lake. It’s one of those small details that can add a touch of affordable luxury to a stay.

Close to My Favorite Lake Como Experiences

Another reason I keep coming back to hotels in Menaggio Lake Como is how close you are to some of the best experiences on the lake. From here, it’s easy to visit Villa Carlotta and Villa del Balbianello—two of the most iconic villas in the region.

You’re also close to the Lake Como Greenway. I think it’s one of the most rewarding hiking trails Lake Como Italy offers. It moves quietly through small towns, along stone passageways, and residential corners over to the waterfront and back again. It gives you a chance to explore and see a more natural side to the lake.

Heading north, you can discover places like Castello di Rezzonico if you want to see a quieter side of the lake. I like mixing in smaller towns with the more popular stops—it gives you a better sense of how varied Lake Como really is.

Better Value (Without Compromising the Experience)

Prices are still very much in Lake Como territory, but compared to some of the more high-profile towns, your money tends to go a bit further here—especially when it comes to hotels and dining. That’s one of the reasons I keep recommending hotels in Menaggio Lake Como—you’re still getting the same setting, but with a bit more flexibility in your budget.

One thing that really stands out here is pool access. While Lake Como looks incredible, you don’t actually see that many people swimming in it in most areas. What I’ve found is that the experience feels more luxurious when you have access to a pool. Being able to sit or float in the water, with comfortable loungers and a full lake view in front of you, is a completely different way to enjoy the lake.

And this is where Menaggio has an edge. There are a number of hotels here with great pool setups, which isn’t always the case in other towns around the lake.

If you decide to book one of the hotels in Menaggio Lake Como without a pool, you still have a standout option: Victoria Beach Club. It’s one of the chicest lidos on the lake, with an infinity pool, well-spaced loungers, beach-style seating with umbrellas, and a restaurant and bar on-site. You can buy a day pass, so it’s easy to build it into your stay even if your hotel doesn’t include pool access.

Where to Stay in Menaggio (What Actually Matters)
