A Better Way to Do Lake Como: Lunch and a Villa Walk in Mandello del Lario
If there’s one thing I’ve learned after a decade of living in Milan and spending countless weekends circling Lake Como, it’s that some of the most rewarding spots aren’t the ones anyone tells you about — they’re the ones you stumble into. Mandello del Lario was exactly that for me: an unassuming lakeside town with a genuinely standout gourmet restaurant, a shoreline lined with graceful Art Nouveau villas, and a train ride so easy it practically begs for a spontaneous day trip.
Just 50 minutes from Milan, Mandello del Lario delivers that perfect mix of great food, lake views, and architectural surprises — the kind of place that turns an ordinary afternoon into a story you want to share.

Why Mandello del Lario Belongs on Your Lake Como List
Mandello del Lario isn’t the town that gets the headlines. It won’t be the place someone mentions first when rattling off Lake Como favorites, like Bellagio and Varenna, and that’s part of its charm. It’s quieter. Slower. Built for wandering.
And if you’re the sort of traveler who likes slipping into a place without the expectation of “must-see” crowds, Mandello del Lario lands perfectly. What surprised me most was how effortlessly the town blends its industrial heritage with lakeside elegance. Local entrepreneurs didn’t build factories — they built villas. And not just any villas, but beautifully crafted Art Nouveau residences with detail, color, and personality that you rarely see up close around the lake.

Names like Falk, Fiocchi, Carconi, and Guzzi aren’t just historic footnotes here; they’re the families who left their imprint on Mandello del Lario, shaping its architectural personality. One of the biggest surprises is learning that Moto Guzzi, founded by Carlo Guzzi, established its very first motorcycle workshop here back in 1919 — and that the Museo Moto Guzzi still anchors part of the town’s identity. (It’s temporarily closed for renovations as of early 2026, but worth keeping on your list for future visits.)

A Beautiful Arrival: From the Train Station to the Lakefront
One of the best parts of choosing Mandello del Lario as a day trip is how simple the logistics are. The train from Milan takes about 50 minutes, and runs hourly. From the station, it’s a short 10-minute walk down to the water. And that walk brings you right past the Art Nouveau villas that make Mandello del Lario feel instantly different from many other Lake Como towns.

The walk toward the lakefront along Via Armando Diaz and XXIV Maggio is calm and residential, framed by early-1900s villas in soft pastels with iron balconies and decorative flourishes. With no real traffic pushing you along, you can actually slow down and notice the details — the curves, the colorwork, the craftsmanship. I found myself shifting to a slower pace, enjoying the fresh air and taking in far more than I expected on such a short stroll.
Once you reach the lake zone, you’ll find a small public garden, a lakeside promenade, and a relaxed waterfront where you could easily sit with a coffee before lunch. The views open wide across Lake Como.

Where to Stay in Mandello del Lario: Villa Confalonieri & More
If you decide to turn your day trip into a night or even a weekend stay, Mandello del Lario has some unique villa accommodation options. Before diving deeper into these options, here’s the link to Booking.com, my preferred booking engine. It’s where I book most of my own stays, and using my link helps support the time I spend researching locations and updating guides — at no additional cost to you.
One that stopped me in my tracks was Villa Confalonieri, built in 1913 — a villa that looks like it fell out of a storybook in the best possible way. Seven bedrooms, sprawling gardens, a gorgeous pool that makes you pause. What’s especially interesting is that you can rent not just the whole villa for gatherings or weddings, but also select one-bedroom units for a smaller, more intimate stay.
It’s exactly the kind of place that makes Mandello del Lario feel like a destination rather than a pass-through town, especially if you want a quieter Lake Como weekend without sacrificing style.
If you’re looking for a true splurge weekend, Villa Lario Resort Mandello offers a more polished, luxury-forward experience right on the water. Think manicured grounds, a lakefront terrace that feels made for slow mornings, and a pool with views that stretch across the water. It’s one of the most refined places to stay in Mandello del Lario, ideal if you want a quiet, indulgent Lake Como weekend without the crowds of the headline towns.
For something more relaxed and village-style, the diffused hotel Mamma Ciccia offers small apartments sprinkled throughout the historic center. It’s a great pick if you prefer having your own space, want a home-base feel, or plan to stay a bit longer to experience everyday life in Mandello del Lario.

Other Things to See in Mandello del Lario
While lunch will likely be the highlight (more on that next), Mandello del Lario has more depth than its size suggests. I loved wandering into the main square, where cafés spill out under the sun and locals linger with espresso or a late afternoon spritz. It’s the kind of square that reveals the rhythm of a lived in Italian lakeside town.
Elsewhere around Mandello del Lario, you’ll find:
- Torre di Magiana
- Several small but beautiful churches
- The Museum of Sacred Art, filled with votive offerings and religious artifacts
- Teatro di San Lorenzo, a small local theater with real character
And if you’re a food traveler at heart, Mama Cicciaa offers not only a restaurant but a cooking academy, with classes available in English.
But let’s be honest — the real showstopper is what comes next.

The Best Part of Mandello del Lario: Lunch at Il Giardinetto
If there’s a single reason to plan a trip to Mandello del Lario, it’s lunch at Il Giardinetto.
This is the kind of restaurant that pulls you in slowly — the water beneath you, the glass-encased dining room with panoramic views, and plates so beautifully executed that you instantly understand why locals consider this place special.
Their weekday à la carte menu was a dream. While it changes seasonally, what caught my eye included:
- Artichoke with Parmesan foam
- Risotto with perch fillets, butter, and sage
- Cacio e pepe ravioli with leek and potatoes
- Potato gnocchi with char, white fish, pike, and burrata
The menu is seasonal, but always elegant. And the mains are just as refined:
- Swordfish with almonds and roasted leek
- Duck breast with mustard and whipped spinach
- Roasted veal with truffled potatoes and balsamic herbs
Sundays bring the “Sunday Sensation,” a €59 tasting-style format including appetizer, first course, and main — an exceptional value for the quality, plating, and location.
My only accidental misstep? Showing up on a holiday without a reservation. Their hours when I visited during the winter were tight (12:15–2:30 for lunch and 7:15–9:30 for dinner, closed Mondays), and the dining room fills quickly. I missed out — and immediately decided I’d return to Mandello del Lario just for this meal.
Because that’s exactly what this restaurant is: a place you plan a day around.

A Perfect Afternoon Walk After Lunch
Once you step off the terrace at Il Giardinetto, the best thing to do in Mandello del Lario is simply walk it off. The lakefront stretch is peaceful, the villas are architectural gems, and the town feels like it’s held onto a slower pace that the busier Lake Como spots lost years ago.
This is where Mandello del Lario becomes memorable — not because it’s packed with attractions, but because of the lake of tourist shops, it invites you to savor what’s already there: the water, the villas, the air, the quiet.

Is Mandello del Lario Worth the Trip? Absolutely.
If you want a Lake Como experience that isn’t predictable, isn’t crowded, and isn’t on every “must-do” list, Mandello del Lario delivers.
Here’s why it earns a spot on your itinerary:
- It’s an easy 50-minute train ride from Milan
- The walk from the station passes beautiful Art Nouveau villas
- Il Giardinetto is a destination in itself
- The town feels calm, elegant, and relaxed
