Things to Do in Lake Garda Italy: 19 Amazing Experiences From Roman Ruins to Lemon Terraces

It took a few trips around Lake Garda before I realized the real magic of the lake lies beyond the obvious stops — in the cultural experiences scattered around its towns and shores. From Roman ruins and medieval castles to lemon terraces, wine tastings, and beautiful artisanal shops, these are the moments that truly bring the lake to life.

After years of visits — sometimes quick weekends from Milan and sometimes longer explorations — I’ve curated this list of my favorite things to do in Lake Garda Italy: experiences that capture the lake’s history and heritage, incredible food, great drinks, and the creative spirit you discover while wandering its towns.

19 Things to Do in Lake Garda Italy

1. Stand Inches Away From Roman Mosaics in Desenzano

One of the most fascinating things to do in Lake Garda Italy is visiting the Roman Villa in Desenzano del Garda. The first time I walked inside, I couldn’t believe how close you can actually get to the mosaics. In many museums they’re roped off far away, but here you can stand just a foot or two from them and really study the patterns and tiny stone pieces that make up the designs.

What’s left of the villa is surprisingly extensive, and the detail in the floors is incredible — geometric patterns, scenes, and textures that have survived nearly two thousand years. It’s also usually very quiet, which makes it feel like you’re discovering something special rather than squeezing through a crowded attraction.

2. Visit the Castle in Desenzano

Desenzano’s castle is one of those places I ignored on my first few visits. I saw it up on the hill and thought, maybe another time. Then last year I wandered up because there was a temporary exhibition and ended up having one of the most memorable cultural experiences I’ve had on the lake.

Local students had created an art exhibition inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy. As I moved through the castle rooms, they explained the different rings of Dante’s world through artwork they had created with a professional artist. Walking through the castle while students told the story made it feel like a glimpse into local culture rather than a typical museum visit. Ever since then, I always check what’s happening inside the castle when I’m in town.

3. Spend an Afternoon at the Beaches in Desenzano

When the weather starts warming up, beach time becomes one of my favorite things to do in Lake Garda Italy.

Desenzano has a couple of small beaches that are perfect for slowing down for a few hours. Margy Beach has smooth pebbles and great lake views, while Feltrinelli Beach is a little livelier and even has paddle boats you can rent.

What I love most about these beaches is that even when I’m not planning to swim, they’re wonderful places to relax. Earlier in the season — April or early May — you can rent a chair, sit by the water, open a book, and just enjoy the sun before the summer crowds arrive. It’s one of those simple lake moments that always makes me happy.

One of my favorite things to do in Lake Garda Italy is hunting for vintage treasures

4. Hunt for Vintage Treasures at Babila Antiques

Shopping isn’t always the first thing people think of when planning things to do in Lake Garda Italy, but Babila Antiques in Desenzano is one place I never skip.

What makes this shop special isn’t just what they sell — it’s how they stage everything. The owners have an incredible eye for creating little scenes throughout the store. Antique globes sit next to coral sculptures mounted on pedestals, vintage objects are grouped into perfect little displays, and everywhere you look there’s another arrangement that makes you want to buy the entire section and recreate it at home.

If I ever built a bookshelf designed like a wunderkammer, Babila would be my first stop to fill it. Alongside beautiful French vintage pieces, they also carry wonderful vintage Italian objects, decorative curiosities, and small furniture pieces that feel like they belong in a collector’s cabinet.

My husband and I have even taken a few pieces home on the train after visiting — which probably tells you how hard it is to leave empty-handed.

Scaligero Castle in Sirmione

5. Walk Across the Drawbridge Into Sirmione

Sirmione is one of my absolute favorite towns on Lake Garda, and the entrance alone makes it unforgettable.

To reach the historic center you cross a drawbridge and pass straight through Castello Scaligero, a medieval castle surrounded by water with narrow channels flowing through it. The towers rise dramatically above the lake, and stepping inside feels like walking into another era.

Once you pass through the castle gates, narrow lanes spread out in every direction. This is where the real fun begins — wandering through little streets lined with beautiful shops, gelato spots, wine bars, and restaurants tucked into hidden corners. I’ve been here many times and still feel like I discover somewhere new every visit.

6. Explore the Grotte di Catullo

At the far end of the Sirmione peninsula lie the impressive ruins known as the Grotte di Catullo.

These Roman ruins sit in a spectacular position overlooking the lake. Visiting early in the morning — before the summer heat arrives — is one of the most atmospheric things to do in Lake Garda Italy.

7. Take a Boat Ride Around Sirmione

One of my favorite things to do in Lake Garda Italy is taking the small boat tour that circles the Sirmione peninsula.

The ride lasts about 40–50 minutes and gives you incredible views of the castle, the ruins of the Roman villa, and the dramatic shoreline of the peninsula. I’ve actually done this boat ride three times — once with my husband, once when my parents visited, and once with my in-laws — and every time it’s been one of the highlights of their trip.

I love seeing views of the water flowing into Scaligero castle that you can only get from the boat. It also stops near the thermal springs bubbling beneath the water, something many people don’t even realize exists.

8. Relax in the Thermal Spas of Sirmione

Because of its natural hot springs, Sirmione is home to several thermal spas. Spending an afternoon soaking in warm mineral pools is one of the most relaxing things to do in Lake Garda Italy — especially after a morning exploring the town.

The most famous spot is the Terme di Sirmione Spa & Thermal Garden, located right on the edge of the lake near the Grotte di Catullo. The setting is beautiful — thermal pools overlooking Lake Garda, surrounded by gardens and quiet corners where you can unwind.

There are several pools to move between, both indoors and outdoors, each filled with the naturally heated mineral water that Sirmione is known for. Some pools have hydrotherapy jets and massage stations, while others are designed simply for relaxing and enjoying the lake views. I like that you can buy different passes, for a full day, 5 hours or an evening.

9. Explore the Fortress Town of Peschiera del Garda

Peschiera del Garda is a UNESCO World Heritage site thanks to its remarkable star-shaped Venetian fortress, part of the historic Venetian defensive system that once protected northern Italy. When you arrive, it’s immediately clear why this town was so strategically important — canals wrap around the historic center, stone bridges connect different sections of the fortifications, and massive bastions rise from the water.

I like to simply wander around. Walking along the canals and fortress walls gives you a real sense of how the town functioned as a military stronghold centuries ago. The bastions form a distinctive geometric pattern, and from certain vantage points you can clearly see the star-shaped design that made the fortress so effective.

10. Bike the Mincio Path to Borghetto

From Peschiera you can bike along the scenic Mincio cycling path toward Borghetto sul Mincio. The path winds through countryside and vineyards and is one of the most enjoyable outdoor things to do in Lake Garda Italy.

11. Visit Gardaland

If you’re looking for a great day at an amusement park, check out Gardaland, Italy’s largest amusement park. Located just outside Peschiera del Garda, it’s easily accessible by bus and offers a completely different side of the lake.

Guerrini Rizzardi

12. Go Wine Tasting in Bardolino

Bardolino is famous for its red wines and olive oil, which makes wine tasting one of the most enjoyable things to do in Lake Garda Italy. One of my favorite stops here is Guerrieri Rizzardi, where you can enjoy tasting flights and browse their small gourmet shop filled with pastas, sauces, and other Italian specialties.

Little Chicchetti sandwiches at Munis

13. Try Cicchetti During Aperitivo at Munis

Right next door to Guerrieri Rizzardi is Munis, and the setting here is one of my favorite aperitivo spots around the lake.

While the ferry pier nearby can feel busy and energetic, Munis has a garden seating area that feels completely different — quiet, relaxed, and tucked away from the crowds. Sitting outside with a glass of wine and a plate of cicchetti feels like stepping into a little oasis.

Their menu features around twenty different cicchetti options — small bites inspired by Venetian traditions. Seafood, meats, cheeses, vegetables — all beautifully prepared and served as little gourmet snacks.

My favorite way to order is their plate where you can choose three different cicchetti, creating your own tasting. With a glass of Bardolino wine in hand, it’s one of the most delicious things to do in Lake Garda Italy.

Me, visiting a Limonaia in Limone Sul Garda

14. Walk the Lemon Terraces of Limone sul Garda

One of the most unique things to do in Lake Garda Italy is visiting the historic lemon terraces in Limone sul Garda. Long before tourism arrived, this part of the lake was famous for its lemon production. The steep slopes above the town were carefully terraced with stone walls to create sheltered gardens where citrus trees could grow — something that seems almost impossible when you see how dramatic the landscape is here.

These terraces, known as limonaie, were built to protect the delicate lemon trees from cold winds while capturing as much sunlight as possible. During the height of production, lemons grown here were exported throughout Europe.

Today one of these historic lemon houses has been preserved as a small museum, allowing visitors to walk through the terraced structure and see how the system worked. Stone pillars once supported wooden beams and glass panels that could be added during the colder months to create a kind of greenhouse for the trees.

15. Take a Day Trip Beyond Lake Garda

One of the most underrated things to do in Lake Garda Italy is taking a day trip along Italy’s high-speed rail corridor. It’s incredibly easy to reach several extraordinary cities filled with history, art, and UNESCO sites.

Two of the southern towns around the lake have train stations (Desenzano del Garda, Peschiera del Garda) from which you can easily reach:

  • Verona — take in an Opera or visit Juliet’s balcony. About 20 minutes by high-speed train
  • Brescia — discover an un the radar UNESCO corridor of incredible ruins, frescoes and more. Around 15 minutes by train
  • Vicenza — see the Palladian villas and learn what famous buildings he inspired (hint…the White House). About 40 minutes
  • Milan — visit the Fashion capital, and take in the incredible Castello Sforzesco and Last Supper. Roughly 50 minutes
  • Venice — enjoy the canal city and shop for incredible artisan souvenirs. About 1.5 hours to Venice Santa Lucia station.

Each of these cities offers incredible cultural experiences — from Roman ruins and Renaissance architecture to world-class museums and historic piazzas.

I’ve written detailed guides to many of these destinations with my favorite places to eat, drink, and explore, so if you’re spending several days on the lake, adding one of these day trips can bring an entirely different dimension to your trip.

One of the best things to do in Lake Garda Italy is to explroe the Vittoriale

16. Explore the Vittoriale degli Italiani

It took me a few trips before I finally visited the Vittoriale degli Italiani in Gardone Riviera, and now I can’t believe I waited so long.

The estate was home to poet and larger-than-life personality Gabriele D’Annunzio, and it’s one of the strangest and most fascinating places I’ve visited anywhere. The complex includes gardens, museums, an amphitheater overlooking the lake, an actual warship embedded in the hillside, and even the airplane D’Annunzio used during his political adventures.

Inside the house you’ll find rooms packed with objects he collected — gifts, artifacts, and eccentric decorations. Even if you’ve never heard of him, the place is unforgettable.

One of the best things to do in Lake Garda Italy, eat at a Michelin starred restaurant

17. Enjoy a Michelin-Star Dinner at Il Fagiano

Inside the Grand Hotel Fasano, Il Fagiano offers one of the most memorable dining experiences on the lake. You enter through a wooden door into a small dining room with only a handful of tables, surrounded by beautiful wood-paneled walls. The atmosphere feels intimate and elegant — almost like stepping into a refined wine cellar rather than a formal restaurant.

What I love most about Il Fagiano is that you don’t have to commit to the full tasting menu. As someone who’s a fairly picky eater and doesn’t eat seafood, that flexibility makes a big difference. My husband can happily order seafood dishes while I choose something completely different — usually red meat or a vegetarian dish — and we can both enjoy the experience without feeling locked into the same menu.

Of course, the service is exactly what you’d expect from a Michelin-starred restaurant: attentive, polished, and thoughtful without ever feeling stiff. But some of my favorite moments were the little surprises along the way. The amuse-bouche arrives as a small tray with several different bites to try, and honestly I could have happily ordered three or four trays of that alone. And when dessert arrives, it’s presented as a gold tree of different tastes — a playful way to end the meal.

The outdoor pool at Grand Hotel Fasano

18. Spend a Pool Day at Lake Garda’s Best Hotels

Sometimes my favorite things to do in Lake Garda Italy involve doing absolutely nothing. A few hotels around the lake have incredible pools or lake terraces that are perfect for spending a long, lazy afternoon.

If you’re browsing places to stay, I usually check rates and make my reservations with booking.com. It’s the site I use most when planning trips, for ease of use, information and pricing of hotels. If you happen to book through my link, it helps support the research and travel behind guides like this at no extra cost to you.

At Grand Hotel Fasano, there are actually two pools — an indoor spa pool and a beautiful outdoor pool overlooking the lake. If you visit during shoulder season like March or April, the outdoor pool is heated.

In Lazise, Hotel Classique has a charming pool surrounded by greenery and sits right in the heart of town.

In Sirmione, I love Hotel Flaminia, mainly because of the terrace built directly over the water where you can swim from the deck and enjoy a quiet nightcap while watching the lights across the lake.

And in Desenzano, Park Hotel has a rooftop pool and fun interior design touches that give the hotel real personality.

19. Ferry Hop Between Lake Garda Towns

One of the simplest and most enjoyable things to do in Lake Garda Italy is hopping on the ferry and heading to another town.

It’s a wonderful way to explore the lake slowly — arriving somewhere new for lunch, aperitivo, shopping, or just a walk along the waterfront.
