Introduction: What Makes Görlitz Christmas Market So Special?

This charming town transforms into a winter wonderland during the Christmas season, boasting one of the most delightful Christmas markets you could ever imagine. It’s difficult to describe how magical the town is, the cute antique and holiday shops making treasure hunting an experience. At Spritzience we like to collect vintage German Christmas ornaments and this was a spot that I did not leave empty handed.

Plus the architecture of the buildings, and the small town setting- as soon as I set foot in the 2 old squares – the Obermarkt and the Untermarkt I kicked myself that I hadn’t booked my hotel to stay overnight there- it was just pure magic and I didn’t want to leave the festive atmosphere. Part of it, is that the market felt more unique with stalls spread out – it felt a little less commercial than the bigger markets in Saxony.

It’s brimming with local artisans showcasing their crafts—think holiday floral arrangements and traditional Silesian goodies that will make your taste buds dance with joy. And don’t forget to warm up with a cup of glühwein (that’s mulled wine for those not in the know) as you stroll through stalls adorned with festive decorations.

So grab your mittens and get ready to create some wonderful memories! Whether you’re hunting for unique gifts or simply soaking up the holiday spirit, Görlitz, Germany promises an experience filled with warmth, joy, and perhaps just a sprinkle of magic!

A Stroll Through History

Let’s take a delightful stroll through history, shall we? Picture this: charming streets lined with historic architecture that looks like it jumped straight out of a fairy tale. You can almost hear the whispers of the past as you wander through these enchanting lanes. It’s like every corner has a story to tell!

One of the most fascinating aspects is that some of these areas may become UNESCO World Heritage sites. The town has applied for a UNESCO cultural title, based on 40 hall buildings (former merchant palaces) that have been built in the style of the 16th century traders. These houses are what helps give the town its magical feel.

And here’s a little insider tip: keep an eye out for buildings funded by anonymous donors. Yes, you heard that right! Some lovely souls have stepped in to preserve these gems without seeking the spotlight. So next time you admire that stunning façade or quaint little café, remember there might be an unsung hero behind its restoration.

Looking across the bridge to Zgorzelec, Poland

Gorlitz After WW2

Nestled about 60 miles from the charming city of Dresden in Germany, this little gem sits right on the Polish border.

A quaint town that straddles the border between Germany and Poland. You might be wondering why this charming little place found itself divided after World War II. Well, grab a cup of coffee (or perhaps something stronger if you need it), and let’s dive into a bit of history!

After the dust settled from the war, many of the borders in Europe were redrawn like a toddler with a crayon. Gorlitz was no exception. The city was split down the middle, with one side remaining in Germany and the other becoming Zgorzelec in Poland. This division stemmed from decisions made during conferences among Allied leaders who wanted to stabilize post-war Europe but ended up creating some rather peculiar borders.

Fun fact: If you stroll along the Neisse River that runs through Gorlitz, you can literally walk from Germany across a small bridge to Poland without even needing your passport—how cool is that? You’ll be surprised at how different the now Polish side of the town looks- with more modern buildings many built during Communist times, make for quite a contrast to the medieval look of Gorlitz in Germany.

Gorlywood: Movie Filming in Town

When I arrived to Gorlitz, I decided to walk from the train station to the old town instead of taking a tram or bus. As I walked the streets I had this strange sensation that I had seen some of the buildings before and then I started to see some signage speaking to “Gorlywood” and I realized why.

Gorlywood is a new nickname for Gorlitz as it’s become quite the hotspot for film productions, and it’s easy to see why. Take “The Reader,” for instance. Who knew that our quaint streets could double as post-war Germany? Or how about “Around the World in 80 Days”?

You might even catch yourself imagining Phileas Fogg running past while you grab your morning coffee! And let’s not forget Quentin Tarantino’s thrilling “Inglorious Basterds.” The tension of that film might just linger in the air if you walk down those cobblestone paths.

Then there’s Wes Anderson’s whimsical “Hotel Grand Budapest,” which showcased the town’s unique charm perfectly. It makes you want to don a bow tie and sip tea while discussing art with friends, while walking around the Kaufhaus.

Best Place For A Spritz at Gorlitz Christmas market

It wouldn’t be a Spritzience blog post if we didn’t talk about drinks. While we of course favor the Spritz for spring and summer, during the Christmas period – we’re fully loyal to Glühwein ( mulled wine). This spiced delight is served hot and is guaranteed to warm your soul (and maybe even get you singing carols).

Even Santa gets in on the game, Hier Glühwein is also pretty fun to say. You just can’t go wrong with a cup or 2 of this festive drink as you soak in all the holiday cheer around you.

Tip: Many of the stalls at Gorlitz Christmas market have special mug designs, where you are charged a Pfand (deposit) for the mug. If you return the mug to the same stall after enjoying your Glühwein the pfand is returned. If you want to keep the mug, just don’t return it – as you’ve paid for it with the pfand.

I’m a fan of these glasses, as it’s great on a cold weekend to open your kitchen cabinets and find a fun coffee mug to use – and dream of Glühwein’s past at your favorite Christmas market. I try to get at least 2 so I have a set, or if I really like the glasses…well you can see what happens here.

Tantalizing Treats: What to Eat at the Gorlitz Christmas Market

First up on your culinary adventure is the classic bratwurst. Picture this: a juicy sausage grilled to perfection, nestled in a warm bun, and topped with mustard or sauerkraut. It’s not just food; it’s an experience that will make you feel like you’ve been transported to a cozy German kitchen. Grab one while wandering through the market—it’s perfect for munching as you browse.

And if you’re feeling particularly indulgent (who wouldn’t be during the holidays?), don’t miss out on roasted chestnuts. They’re like little nuggets of warmth that are perfect for nibbling while strolling around. Just make sure to keep an eye out for those vendors—they tend to disappear quickly!

Last but certainly not least are the sweet treats! From lebkuchen (gingerbread cookies) to stollen (a fruitcake-like bread that’s practically begging for some powdered sugar), there’s no shortage of sugary delights waiting for you at every turn of the Gorlitz Christmas market.

You can’t miss out on pierogi! These delicious dumplings come stuffed with everything from savory potatoes and cheese to sweet fruits. It’s like getting a warm hug in food form. Trust me; one bite will have you dreaming of your grandma’s kitchen!

And let’s not forget about Lachs (salmon) smoked on the fire—with a side of rosemary potatoes, salad or as a sandwich. It’s fun to watch the workmanship as the stall owners smoke the lachs over an open fire.

Unique Gifts and Crafts: Shopping at the Gorlitz Christmas Market

Ah, the thrill of holiday shopping at a local market – it’s like being a kid in a candy store, but instead of sweets, you’re surrounded by handcrafted gifts and unique souvenirs! If you find yourself in Gorlitz during the festive season, brace yourself for some delightful holiday decorations that will make your home feel like a winter wonderland.

One of the best parts about shopping at these markets is supporting local artisans. You know what they say: when you buy from a small business, an actual person does a happy dance! Plus, each handcrafted gift tells its own story. Imagine gifting someone a beautifully crafted ornament made by someone right down the street – it’s like giving them a piece of your community!

Now, let’s get to those holiday shopping tips. First off, don’t rush! Take your time wandering through the stalls; there are hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Chat with the artisans – they love sharing about their craft (and who knows? You might learn how to make that stunning pottery yourself!).

As you walk around the Gorlitz Christmas market, don’t forget to look down the smaller alleyways and stores that ring the Untermarkt square, as you’ll also find some great shops to buy gifts. One great find is the Antiquitaten AV Antik-Keller, a treasure trove of antiques in a cellar under one of the historical buildings.

A Magical Evening: Experience the Lights and Entertainment!

One of the highlights of the Gorlitz Christmas market? The live music performances that echo through the air, filling it with joyful melodies. Whether it’s a local band playing classic holiday tunes or a children’s choir harmonizing sweetly, there’s something about live music that makes everything feel just a bit more special.

And trust me, even if you can’t carry a tune in a bucket (no judgment here!), you’ll find yourself tapping your feet along to the rhythm. As the holiday lights come on, the market becomes even more festive and magical.
