What Makes Bassano Del Grappa Unique? The Famous Wooden Bridge and Beyond!

Let’s talk about the star of the show: the famous wooden bridge. It’s also known as “Ponte degli Alpini,” if you want to impress your friends with a bit of Italian flair. This stunning structure has stood tall since the 16th century. This design was created by the famous architect Palladio. Since then, the bridge has been rebuilt several times after unfortunate mishaps (think floods and wars). It’s not just a pretty face; it connects two sides of town. Plus it offers some truly breathtaking views of the Brenta River.

Beyond this iconic bridge lies a treasure trove of history and culture. Did you know that Bassano del Grappa, Italy is also known for its grappa? Yes, that delightful spirit made from grape pomace! You can visit local distilleries to learn about its production process.

Now, if you fancy piazzas (and who doesn’t?), you’ll be delighted by Bassano’s vibrant squares. They’re filled with lively cafés, local shops, and gorgeous historical buildings. It’s so charming to stroll around the squares of the old town and stop for an espresso. Or indulge in some gelato while people-watching—it’s practically an Italian rite of passage!

Plus the window displays in the shops, are beyond delightful, super creative. I found myself in an eyeglass shop, even though I don’t wear glasses, because the window decor with black pigs and bright pink flowers was so alluring – I had to find out what was inside. Next, I was in a bookshop in a former Count’s Palace.

Sip and Savor: Grappa You Can’t Miss – Only in Bassano Del Grappa

You’ll want to savor each sip like it’s your last piece of chocolate cake.

Then there’s the Nardini Distillery, which has been crafting exquisite grappa since 1779. Talk about heritage- it’s Italy’s oldest distillery. Here, you can indulge in tastings that showcase their unique blends and flavors. Insider tip: don’t skip the classic Nardini Bianca. If you’ve ever wandered through a bustling market or a lively city street, you know that the aroma wafting from food stalls can be downright intoxicating. Moretti takes street food to another level. It’s hard not to fall in love with everything they serve. Moretti has been an artisan baker serving up deliciousness since 1907.

As you stroll across the Ponte Vecchio, you’ll start to get wafts of freshly baked bread…and you’ll wonder where it’s coming from. Once I figured it out, it was coming from a pizza shop on the bridge, Premiata Fabbrica Pizza, I stopped in to investigate.

And with all the amazing high end toppings on the pizza, I couldn’t help ordering a piece to try- even though I wasn’t hungry – I think I can generally always make room for a delicious and fresh out of the oven slice of pizza.

Venice: A Shopper’s Paradise for Authentic & Handmade Souvenirs

When you first think about Venice, what probably comes to mind are the canals, St Mark’s Square, and its incredible Basilica and Ducal Palace. However, you would be remiss if you didn’t realize what an incredible artisanal heritage the city is built on. Centuries-old traditions still thrive in the hands of skilled craftspeople. Unlike mass-produced trinkets flooding tourist shops, authentic Venice souvenirs are crafted with dedication, expertise, and an unwavering commitment to heritage if you know where to look.

If you’re coming from Verona, just hop on a train from Verona Porta Nuova station – it’s about a 2 hour ride with 1 or 2 transfers (usually 1 in Venice). And trust me, the scenery along the way is just as picturesque as the destination!

Now, if Venice is your starting point (lucky you!), you can catch a regional train directly to Bassano for a ride of 75 minutes, leaving the station every 30 minutes.

For those jetting in from Milan, grab yourself an espresso and settle in for about two and a half hours on the train. The route usually has a transfer in Vicenza; consider taking a morning train so you could stop off and enjoy lunch or a snack break and a stroll around Vicenza to admire Palladian architecture.

Don’t forget to share this post with someone you know who’s going to Venice, maybe you’ll be lucky and they’ll bring you a grappa souvenir.
